Hey I like your idea there Gus, and as to when? Maybe when hell freezes over, and all the snowmobilers go there to get in some fresh tracks.

And thanks, Andy, for a great idea for a new place to "explore" in winter. Did you say the road system is gated off? It looks from the map like there is lots of great terrain there, probably good for early summer mountain biking too.

Not only is it impossible to avoid the avalanche hazard created by snowmobiles but, as an alpine "pedestrian" in winter, it is often impossible to avoid the snowmobiles themselves, and any incidental danger. Even if his goggles or helmet are not fogged up, a snowmobiler's vision is limited to a small area in front of his machine, and his auditory awareness of his surroundings approaches zero. Did you you really mean "love encounters" with trees, Andy, or was it live encounters?

I had several such incidents when I was first learning to ski off the groomers, on the backside of Stevens, when that area was newly developed. I usually ski alone, which added an unnecessary element of danger to the adventure. It was about the most terrifying thing I've ever experienced, when I was entombed in wet packed snow, my body contorted into an unnatural position, disoriented, often a sharp limb...

<wfCategory>tree-well video,tree-well hazards,skiing in central washington safety tree wells</wfCategory>

I've been curious about the mixed reception of this post too. Like you said, it was a rapid-fire presentation, and because Adam covered so much ground it must have been a challenge to condense it into written format in less than twenty pages. I think you did a fair job of it, but it's a little harder to capture a person's essence in two dimensions. I find Adam likeable, entertaining, knowledgeable and his enthusiasm is infectious.
