Shelly was astounded (maybe chagrined is a better word) by how much good information is buried at this site and invisible to those who don't dig a little. So she's helping you dig for some prizes you may find useful.

If you ski on lightweight cross-country equipment on many of our regional Forest Service roads, you are going to find skinny skins very useful. Many of our roads are steep and you'll frequently encounter snow conditions where no-wax skis aren't giving adequate grip for easy climbing (which is maddeningly tiring on the arms). Likewise in icy or crusty conditions those same stee...

<wfCategory>snowshoeing,skiing,swakane canyon,rattlesnake springs,forest service road</wfCategory>

When I photographed the puccoon, the res...

When I photographed the puccoon, the rest of the plant and surrounding plants were quite toasted so it seems unlikely these sprigs would be so undamaged if this was pre-fire vegetation. In the Sage Hills at the elevation that this picture was taken, most of the puccoon blossoms between mid-April and mid-May, so having it blooming in late October also seems odd if this was pre-fire vegetation.

Not a big tourist site but a popular local recreational area. Great chain of freshwater lakes formed by a river flowing out of the mountains of Guatemala and flowing over lots of little limestone waterfalls to form lakes. Great swimming, good birding, lots of fun exploring as you push through reeds and spill over little cascades between the lakes. It might have been possible to avoid
snow but, given the conditions we found, dealing with the snow was far
easier. On the far side of the gap (Lyman Lake side) there was some
firm, steep snow that was potentially dangerous to try to descend. Here
you could stay on scree to the side of the snow for 50 yards to where
the pitch mellowed out. Then it was easy to walk on the snow again.
The snow here will continue to consolidate and, just to be sure you
