We’re Baack … from Disasters and Distractions

It’s been a peculiar few weeks. Around September 9, fire was lapping at the doors of the world headquarters of WenatcheeOutdoors. We were issued a Level 3 notice and were advised to evacuate the area. We didn’t flee but we did pack our computers in a car and, for several days, waited as fire approached to within a third of a mile of us...

Chain Reaction

"I don't know," Ken says looking skeptically at the dying wheel and thinking about the road-rash possibilities awaiting me on the steeps of Canyon Number 2 Road. "You think that's a good idea?"  I'm reminded of another ride some ten years ago where a simple problem led  to a chain reaction of technologic problems, miscalculations, and minor calamities. "It's positively stupid."

Floral Impressionism

Some viewers take in the aesthetics rather than the science of flowers. For such viewers the interplay of light and color can evoke an emotional response. These photos work on that level and, even if they are out of focus, they're fun.

Ishmael - Old but Good

My daughter asked if I’d read it.
“Ishmael?” I thought and there was the smallest germ of memory. “Is the story about a telepathic gorilla?”
“Re-read it.” my daughter suggested. “It’s your kind of a book…the gorilla is also an environmentalist."

Confessions of Foothills Man

I met him a few miles west of Saddle Rock. I was snowshoeing uphill through a foot of week-old snow—plodding. He was weaving parallel turns through the sagebrush—gliding. He caught sight of me when we were a hundred yards apart and rounded a turn to a stop. He stood there deciding how to confront this queer animal contaminating his ski run.

Sports Drink - Make Your Own

This simple recipe for making your own sports drink (electrolyte drink) is from a reputable source and has been reviewed by registered nutritionists and doctors, so I pass it along with high confidence that it won't poison you, Dear Socrates. It costs about a nickel per quart to make and doesn't fill up our landfills with more loathsome plastic bottles....

Too Many Drugs, Not Enough Nature

A trifecta of ideas converged in a perfect storm of muddy thinking a few days ago. Capital Steps played in Wenatchee. The tune Ten Pills satirized the millions of American looking toward pills to fix problems with their kids, spouse, or themselves.
"Son is on Ritalin and Bextra we thought he had ADD.
But it turns out that the whole time he's just and SOB.

East of the Divide

/ClientFiles/5d519366-9c6e-4bf1-88da-9a5a13184e8a/EastDivide-200-C.jpgChester Marler starts the acknowledgements to his book about historical and recent journeys through the eastern slopes of the North Cascades thusly:

I owe a great deal to friends who have shared mountain trips with me over the years, often helping me see things I might otherwise have not noticed.

Most of us who are goal oriented and physically fit owe a debt to people who slow us down and  help us appreciate the details of places.

Best of Tunes

by Kim T. Anderson

After years of using audio gadgets, I’ve found a sweet spot that’s simple, small, convenient, and relatively cheap. The unit has stood out among the many I’ve used for active sports like running and mountain biking. It may not, however, be the best choice for platform diving.... I started out using different cassette players in the 80’s, moved to the ever-skipping CD player in the 90's
