Brits Over Tye Peak

"There’s so much snow!” they exclaim, their British accents punctuating an observation many make at this point. We’re at Stevens Pass where the snowbanks flanking the highway are truck high. Before our tour is over, they'll also be exclaiming, "There are so many trees."

The Making of a Skier

“Did you ruin her for good this time?” she asks. “Possibly,” I confess....

This story looks at the making (or breaking) of a backcountry skier. It also considers the composition of those who stick with this pleasant misery.

Crazy Urban Skiing

This video may make you rethink the limited view that ski adventures are only about being in the mountains. With this kind of skiing talent, anywhere with snow offers an adventure. Unlike so many ski videos these days, which are only about visuals, this one skillfully knits in an unspoken story -- making it doubly good.

The Skier and The Salmon

Tom Janisch has gone bulimic. Or so his unsympathetic companions accuse as he vomits just below the summit of Cashmere’s West Peak. His illness could be the doing of salmon gone bad ... or of ski 'buddies' gone bad. Either way the legend of Salmon Man's heartiness grows.

October Thighs

Blood drops on Highway 97, the creation of One-Eyelid Al, Donner-Party-styled potlucks, half-witted half-kneed mountain bikers, the foolish following the blind into oblivion…these were just a few of the anecdotes that made the second running of the Battle of the Bikes a storied ride.
