Land Trust Goes Big

The Land Trust announced on February 20 that they are shooting the moon and going big. In an effort that will be the biggest fund-raising campaign launched by a non-profit in the Wenatchee Valley, the CDLT is raising $8.1 million to double the amount of protected open space in the Wenatchee Foothills. What does this mean to the area now and in the future? A whole lot more than you might think.

Saddle Rock 'Lake' - Where Is It?

Think you've seen it all at Saddle Rock? Have you found Saddle Rock Lake and Little Utah Canyon? Have you circumnavigated the entire parcel on trails? Randy Riggs opened my eyes to new possibilities in an old stomping ground.

Twin Lakes

My companions were shocked I’d never hiked to Twin Lakes. “What? Mr. Outdoors hasn’t hiked this? Every outdoorsman who’s any outdoorsman has hiked this one!”

Now I've tried...and I'm still a dismal failure.

Magnet Creek Outings

Although ‘Magnet’ might imply this area attracts lots of people, it’s quite the opposite. Even on a huge weekend (e.g., Labor Day) you’re likely to be alone on this airy but scenic hike near Blewett Pass.

A Morning in the Sage

It’s prime time for walks in the Wenatchee Foothills. The balsamroot in the lower foothills was at peak bloom last weekend. This weekend the lower elevation balsamroots may be sagging, but they'll still be beautiful...and the lupines will be brilliant. Check out these photos.

Hansel Creek - A Tale of Two Passes

We descend powder, corn, glades and roads. What took six hours to climb takes 70 minutes to ski. We arrive at the car scratching our heads...how did we coax such a miraculous ski run from such marginal conditions? Part of the answer lies in dumb luck; part in the tale of two passes.

Eightmile Enlightenment

Trails mirror the company we share them with. Trails can be mute cells of solitary confinement or chatty confession chambers. They can be storied trips to new corners of the world or, as we discover while skiing Eightmile Mountain, roads to Enlightenment.

Dreamchasing on Twin Peaks

It's not as dimwitted as the desire to wrestle crocodiles. Nor as bizarre as dreams of swimming with marine iguanas, but a compulsion to hike the inaccessible East Ridge of Twin Peaks needled me. This weekend the time seemed ripe as we struck off after dark with snow spilling from the sky.
