We had another great event this being the 2nd Annual Moose Dewlap Trek out of the Lake Wenatchee area. The day was perfect with lots of sun, snow and spring conditions on the trail with softening snow late morning and afternoon. Given the spring conditions, the event starting point was moved up to the Fish Lake Snow-Park which made for a 17.8 mile out and back course with an vertical elevation gain/loss of 1,253 ft. Participants enjoyed the trek with more than a few doing the climb and decent loop at the top a number of times for a little extra cardio.

We had 152 participants this year compared to 139 last year or an 8.5% increase. Pre-registration was 119 compared to 65 last year. It was fun to see a few participants that had done the Hog Loppet in the past sporting their old tee-shirts. There were a number of local Nordic skiers and many from west of the mountains and some from south to Yakima. The Leavenworth Winter Sports Club was encouraged by the participation and quality conditions in the Meadow Creek area. We see this venue as accessible with stable and predictable conditions for hosting a winter event.

As far as considering an earlier date in the year for this event, the L.W.S.C will always be open to looking at options that would not conflict with other on-going events or operations. That said, the weather will always be a factor. This year the 7 days leading up to event day had below freezing conditions at night before a warm front moved into the Northwest just before the event. We hope to get to prepare the long course of 26 miles in the future and with the out-and-back lay-out, it still allows those that prefer a shorter distance the option for that.

The Moose Dewlap Citizen Trek was generously supported by our sponsors and volunteers including; the Lake Wenatchee Rec Club, Bavarian Boondockers, Chelan County, Cascade Medical Center, Dan’s Market, Anjou Bakery, Liberty Orchards, Sunny FM KCSY and many others. The L.W.S.C. also thanks the snowmobile community at-large for sharing the trails with us.
