Oval Pass and Eagle Pass--Trails and Climbs

The Oval Pass and Eagle Pass environs of the Chelan-Sawtooth Wilderness offer visitors miles of well-graded trails, a half-dozen 8,000-foot peaks with non-technical climbing routes, and larch forests that are the color of dollar bills in spring and the color of gold in autumn.

Mormon Ladies Lakes Traverse

When describing this local backpacking trip to friends as a traverse of the "Mormon Ladies Lakes", I received more than a few blank stares. Apparently the lakes along this route are named for the many wives of Brigham Young – including Edna, Mary, Margaret, Florence, Alice, and Flora. Whatever you call this route, it's a good one.

Devils Gulch Alternatives

Devils Gulch is Central Washington's best-known mountain bike ride.  Less known is that from the upper trailhead of this famed ride, there are a half dozen other trails for hikers, trail runners, and mountain bikers to enjoy. Summer is a good time to ride these high trails.

Red Devil Run

The Red Devil Challenge Trail Runs are coming up on May 31. There will be a 10K and and 25K run and the details of the event listed here. Even if you don't want to run this as an event, keep in mind the route on any other day is a good recreational trail run and an excellent mountain bike ride.

Before He Wakes

"Before He Wakes," was filmed in the Wenatchee Foothills last fall. This short film, by Wenatchee resident Steven Gnam, is about one woman's daily routine to rise in the dark and greet the sunrise. The imagery does a great job in showcasing the Wenatchee Valley.

Echo Ridge in Spring

The tangle of old logging roads along Echo Ridge (famous for Nordic skiing in winter) offers excellent opportunities for hiking, mtn biking, and running along fairly flat routes with expansive views over Lake Chelan and the high Cascades. This is an especially good area for beginning mountain bikers and our new map has all the newest trails.
