Reynolds-Rennie Loop: The Wallowas of Chelan County

The Wallowa Mountains tower over the plains of northeastern Oregon. I cut my teeth there as a backcountry skier so they are near and dear to me. When it comes to skiing beautiful Wallowaesque terrain, however, the mountains of the Chelan Sawtooth Wilderness are less visited and a whole lot closer...

A Sawtooth Traverse

Coron Polley, Tom Janisch, and Adam Vognild recently made a 3-day tour through the Lake Chelan Sawtooth Wilderness. The views and turns were so good we wouldn't have blamed them if they'd missed the boat back from Stehekin.

A New Quiet on The Western Front

In early April, big news went down regarding snowmobile use on Forest Service lands. A federal court stated the Forest Service needs to manage snowmobile use on its lands. Deals and Steals

With downhill skiing winding down for the winter (Mission's last day is April 7), it's time to ponder your strategy for keeping skiing affordable next season. The cheapest prices for a pass will be found by purchasing before June 1. Until then, seasons passes for the 2013-14 season at Mission will run $349 for adults, and will bump up another $75 after the cutoff.

WenOut Day - How Did You Spend It?

Risks and Rewards - Skiing the Backcountry with Kids

Mike Lanza of The Big Outside sent us this piece about teaching his son Nate to backcountry ski. At age 12, Nate already views grueling uphill slogs as "an awesome opportunity to get exercise and be outdoors. The downhill is just an epic bonus." We like this kid.

King Creek Tour

A pleasant, relatively private winter outing providing pretty views over the Blewett Pass area and a destination for all types of snow play (light touring, snowshoeing, telemark skiing and ski touring). A Forest Service Road makes the ascent of these east-facing slopes simple. And the moderate-angle slopes studded with ponderosa pines gives ski tourers a nice place to carve turns. See map.
